Can anyone help me? My bro has a '87 Buick Grand National that stalls from 4700 RPM to 5000 RPM's. Timing doesn't feel like its being pulled. We recently put 43 lb injectors and a fuel pump from Red Armstrong on the car. He also burnt a chip for us with the new upgrades. The chip he burnt for us, is when it only happens for. All the other chips the car doesn't stall but doesn't run as well either. The car also doesn't want to shift with this chip after it stalls at 4700-5000 rpm's. Any suggestions on what's causing this?

On another note, I also had s-10 wheel cylinders installed in hopes of holding more boost at launches. But the car only holds 2 lbs of boost vs. 7 before. Any suggestions here how to get more boost at the line?

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan Hinderer

First some data would help like scan tool numbers. This would really help. When you say stall I beleive you mean it falls on its face or stops pulling. Usually when people talk stall they mena torque convertor stall. With this in mind I would ask how many miles on the car and what has been done other than the chip and injectors? If nothing this could be a mere valve spring issue. The Stock valve springs are notorious for causing the motor to give up at 4700 rpm. New valve springs would be in order. If you are doing them yourself, buy the valve spring tool from Kirbans. It is well worth the money in the aggravation saved. I know. The transmission is not controlled by the ECM and as such would be a seperate problem. It probably needs to have the TV cable adjusted properly. The chip and injectors you have should be a very good combo. Red Armstrong has some good chips for the 009 injectors which is what I gather you have. I would also get youeself a scan tool. These can come in many shaoes and sizes. The best ones out there are Scanmaster from ramchargers or the PC based TurboLink and Direct Scan. The latter ones need a laptop but you can record and send the files to others who can help you do some tunning. Any of these are a necessity when tunning the car. The handheld ones are better than nothing and will work for your needs too. I hope all this helps. Let us know how you do. Also let us know where you are located, some Turbo people may be around the area that can help you out also.

4700 stall???

I think the word "stall" is being used in the wrong place here, Jonathan.
Do you mean that the 4700 is as far as the engine will rev???
4700 stall is the engine speed allowed by the converter before the converter starts to lock and pull.

We need more info before a diagnosis can be made and some help offered.
Scan tool readings?
Fuel pressure?
Boost setting?
Mileage on the car/engine?
Engine condition?
Engine modifications?
Fuel being used?
A shot in the dark:
The Reds chip is fat on the low end, or the fuel pressure is off, thus the low launch boost level vs stock.
The 4700 limit is due to spark retard, tuneup combo, or valve springs.

More info needed...
;) ;)

I'd check with Red.

Hey Chuck,

Is that you, you old fart/geezer?

Is that your cane I just ran over?

Still popping that nitrios?

LOL BTW I never got my airmeter back because of the needling you gave our buddy.

LOL

Here is some more info:

Red told us to have the fuel set at 43 psi on the rail because the chip is set for 43 lbs at the rail. We don't have a any scan tools. Car has 44,XXX miles on it and in great condition. I believe boost is on or around 20 lbs. We always run 110 octane. Some of the mods include: kenne bell intake (on the car when we bought it), voltage booster, drag radials, fuel pump, injectors, and exhaust. The car typically runs 12.60-12.90 but now the car can only muster 13.40's and higher.

The word "stall" was a bad choice of words after I read what I wrote. The car bogs down like it lost power than continues after 5000 rpm's but doesn't shift hard like it normally does.

I'm from Marysville OH (Outside of Columbus) and my brother is living in New Albany OH (Eastside of Columbus).

Thanks for all the help guys,
Jonathan Hinderer

Maybe try turning the FP down some and see.....or turn the boost up....sounds like it may be a little rich up in that range.

More info:

Valve springs had been replaced when car had 35k over a year ago and also the spark plugs and wires had also been replaced at the same time.

The car "bucks" when it bogs, car slows way down then accelerates again.

Any suggestions?

I would try another chip. Maybe Red goofed on the rev limiter? Maybe got a bad chip (the blank) ? He's human..it happens

If it didnt happen before the chip, and it now happens with the chip, its safe to say its the chip.
