I have an 86 GN and Im sure its the origional starter. Now I want to put a new one in, is there any other starter that will fit in our cars? ex. My 92 TY will accept a starter from a newer 454 block and its half the weight. So like will the starter from another newer buick fit that is smaller? Or am I just stuck getting one from like AutoZone? I dont have the cash for a mini starter so if I have to I will get the stock one again. TIA Mike

i like the mini starters

but......if you want cheap get a stock replacement. if you want light get a mini starter from an LT-1 or LT-4. check out big al's mini starters here on the board. good luck, jeremy

So is the starter from those motors a small body starter? Say like the ones from the 454 from the newer Chevy trucks.

starter

Hi,
I beleive that one of these permanent magnet starters is the way to go, light weight and lots of torque. Gm only uses a couple of configurations, and they are very durable.I would suggest ordering one for a late model 3800 series 2. I think the bolt pattern is the same. Good luck!

Went to my old AutoZone store and started looking at starters. I cant belive they didnt have the starter in stock. But I pulled a few of the newer ones off the shelf with the help of the IPC and I found a few that looks like they will work. I am going to pull it off today and go back and measure the mounting ears. I will post the part number so in case anyone would be interested. :) :) :)

gbodyparts.com sells a mini starter with the proper bolts for 99.95. I haven't used it myself but everything else I have bought from them has been top notch :)

It Fit !!!!!

DL9989S is the number from AutoZone. The only thing is you need to get shorter bolts. But you can even bolt up the starter and then hook up the wires after the starter is in. Sounds cool also. it was from a 99 firebird, camaro 350. Bolted right up. Wish I took pics now. it was $129 But I have the lifetime Warr from Zone. I dont have to worry about down time waiting for UPS. Well I hope it helps someone. Thanks for the replies. Mike

Yes a lot lighter and smaller. I was even able to bolt the starter and then the wires. Real easy
