How do you tell if caps have been machined before? Can you re-use them on another block if previously align bored?

dunno, no. I asked kendall once if you could even add a girdle by just machining the bottoms of the caps and not re-align boring, and the answer was no. I guess the reasoning is that the girdle would stress/support the caps differently requiring realigning. To change caps between blocks would be just right out.

clarity

I meant if you bought a set of center steel caps that were previously align bored can you use them on another block(never been machined on) with the required align bore. I am going to align bore my block any way and someone here has a set of caps that might be used(he isn't sure)and I will buy them if I can use them.
Thanks

I'm fairly sure you can. Just machine a little off the flats again to make them out of round again, like a rod when you resize it. This will give material to knock back out on the line bore and hone.
