ive been having trouble with my steering wheel clicking and moving back and forth on the highway and after doing a search it seems to be what is referred to as the "rag joint". what exactly is this and where is it located on the steering linkage? is it the joint right about the rubber knuckle with a bolt on the side of it? what can i do to fix it>?

the "rag" joint is the piece of reinforced rumer that is in the stearing linckage, it is usually covered by the plastic steering shaft cover, its at the point that the cover hast he bump in it, right on the input shaft to the steering box, it has a set of alignment pins that will sometimes click and cuse a steering wheel input.

If you're handy with a drill and a grinder

There is an aftermarket steering coupler kit that costs about $15 to repair that with. Rag joint = steering coupler.

Mine makes the same clicking, and I replaced the whole lower steering shaft with one having a pretty new rag joint in it. The steering felt a little tighter, but there is still play in the box.

If its relatively high milage on the box, thats the way they get. You could do a low-milage box swap. Or adjust the lash a little in the meantime.

by adjusting the lash, do you mean adjusting the steering box itself?
There is a worm gear adjustment on top of the steering box. Just backoff the nut and tighten. Be careful as overtightening will bring major grief.

What he said. Loosen the large, outer hex nut, then with an allen wrench, turn the center allen nut clockwise.

Mark it with something and turn it about a quarter turn at a time! I've been told that heavily worn boxes can usually take about a full turn. But be careful.

Once you get past half a turn...

You may want to go for a drive in between adjustments, or at least cycle the wheel lock to lock. If you go too tight, it will lock or bind just off center.
