Hey all, in a previous post I asked about one 87 GN. There's another one that needs some transmission work done to it. I called the owner and he said that the clutches needed to be replaced. Is there such a thing as clutches in the transmissions? He said all it cost was about $400. Anybody have a clue what he's talking about. Cuz I would probably pick it up if it isn't too expensive to fix. Any advice here guys? TIA

I would plan on a complete rebuild. I doubt any good trans shop would only replace the clutches and send you on your way!

A stock type rebuild would probably run around the $1,000.00+ mark. A good performance rebuild will go $1,500 to $2,000.

I would take $2,000 into consideration against purchase price! These transmissions take a LOT of abuse! A half a$$ repair will only get you a second appointment at the trans shop.

Talk to Bruce at PTS. He's the MAN :D

Where are you located? There is a good tranny guy close to my area that is very reasonable.

You can buy a street/strip trans. from Cottons Performance for $975. My buddy Matt87 has one in his car and it's taken a ton of abuse and has never given him any trouble.

Ok thanks, now is that with labor included as well? And will Cottons be able to install it rather quickly, cuz I've heard it's basically a small shop? Thanks again

You can definatley have cottons install it but that would probably be with out labor. Of course if you have a decent mechanical ability and a garage and tools, trans in these cars are really not that bad to replace. I can have mine out in an hour. Of course I have done it many times but you and a buddy could have this done in a day or less. I prefer to work on my own car though.

I'm not in any way giving out actual estimates for Jack Cotton.
He is my pal but I dont want to step on toes or hold anyone to this but I'd guesstimate about $200 for labor for a tranny swap plus you'll need a tourque converter.Call Jack (413)789-0531
You can just bring your core there and pick up a tranny. He's got awesome trannys for the price.Good Luck

Thanks 2NasstyBuicks, I'll give him a call. I appreciate all the help.
