Just pulled the motor on the 87 (a Jasper's rebuild) with about 40k on rebuilt. After I put on the fuel pump, cold air and chip. Got on it a few times and it started knocking when I let up on it. Not under load. Pulled pan, some play in rods. Crank doesn't look like rolled fillets. The block should be good, but don't know how far over it is. So I will get a different crank. Question:
I'd like a nice street ride that could dip into the 11's. I'm assuming I'll need to try to find a different turbo (te44, or?) and injectors. (have some blue tops on the 84 and some other stuff I could swap). With motor apart what parts performance parts should I buy internally versus bolt ons. Trying to do this for about $2500 to $3000.

Sorry Im a bit slow but....

I was actually wondering why you pulled the engine in the first place?
But check out gm high tech performance magazine, read the buildup on an engine done by Jack Merkel.
Should be a good start
Also check out gnttype.org
That always has good information.
Good luck

Thanks guys. The article from Merkel is real good. I was wondering about things like pistions, etc. Looked like some real good advice. Can I find the gm tech magazine at any book store?
"Why did I pull the motor?"
It started knocking first. then pulled the pan and noticed the slack and also the cylinder walls were a little scored. I also never felt that good about the Jasper's remanufactured motor. It looked like the crank is a non-turbo.
Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

One more question. If I got a shot at a Ta-61 turbo for about $450, would it be a good turbo to work around. Also what else would I have to commit to if I got that? Would it take a different intercooler, what about wastegate, downpipe, etc.

The 61 would probably want a good 3000 stall converter for good street manners.

My TA62 is sweet with the 3200 Protorque in the car.

You should have no problems getting 11's with that baby properly tuned. :)

I'd really worry about getting a good rebuild before buying the bolt ons.

A rebuild would make me do this...

I do need to stay focused on the rebuild first and make sure I do it right. It's so easy to get out there ahead of my budget.
Thanks
