I'm thinking about a new turbo.....I'm running 12:70's with a stock turbo and intercooler,36lb blue tops, xp pump,hot wire..etc

how much more perfomance can i expect with a TA 49,with my set up?

You should be able to get low 12s out of the car right now. I would say get down to 12.30s with what you have then think about making upgrades. Run the stock turbo at 21-22lbs.

49s have dipped into the 10s with the proper, complimentary parts!!!

But I'd get a 44...

:)

My buddy is running 11.80's @ 113-114mph with 23lbs boost. That's with a TA49 and bluetops. We'll see what happens when he runs 26lbs with it:D

To get the real gains of the 49 over the stock turbo, you will need t run the 49 at 23-25lbs. At 20lbs you will not see much difference between the two. Maybe a tenth or two. I am assuming similar 60' times.

Why not toss in a 3000 stall and go with something like a TE-60?

Cost isnt much more, if not the same, as a 49 or a 44. I was thinking TE-44 myself for future upgrade, but I've been considering a looser converter and something larger like a 60.

the reason I was thinking TA49, was the compatabilty with the stock converter,i didnt want to make the streetablity less..
My 60' are in the 1.7 range.....

Stock turbo in a TR is good to 110-113 mph in the 1/4.

TA49/TE44 in a TR is good to 116-118 mph in the 1/4.

At 18 psi and a stock longblock, there is almost no difference in ET/mph between a stock turbo an a TA49/TE44.

At 23 psi, see above differences in mph and calculate the difference in HP.

Nope. A little 231. This has been discussed before on this board. This feat has been accorded to Red and others. I have a friend with a full weight GN with a 49 that runs 11.2s and has more in it.

The upgrade turbos we put on our cars, even the smallest ones, flow a hell of a lot of air...

:)

i agree completely...i had a te-44 turbo from precision turbo and with a bone stock motor and converter i was running mid 11's all day long with 25-27 psi...best time was 11.52 @ 118 mph with 27 psi...factory stock motor with JUST valve spring upgrade at 100k miles...the TA-49 is the same exact turbo only stock appearing...with ported and polished heads and intake, cam and stuff like that these turbos can see low 11's all day long...the best injectors to use on these turbos are the 50's...plenty of fuel

I consistently run 12.0@115mph with a 49 at 24-25psi on a 100% stock longblock (even stock valve springs), stock intercooler, 50's, a 3" Mease DP/testpipe and Hooker catback. I'm running a small 2800 TC, but a 49 will work well with a stock TC. Like Gn-ing, I was going 12.6-12.7's at 106mph with the stock turbo at ~20psi on 100-unleaded (with stock injectors).
I've been running the 49 since last July and loved it since the day I put it in the car. IMO, with the Mease pipe, it spools faster than the stock turbo/DP combo and has the advantage of making nice power at ~25psi, long after the stocker has given up.

I've been running 100 octane unleaded..at 20lbs...no or very little knock..what fuel do you use with the TA49's at 25-27 lbs boost..and if i try the orginal turbo at say 22-23lbs..will it perform better? Do head gaskets hold up well at those boost pressures?...I have a stock 73K eng, with the mods in the sig..

12.2 @ 110mph in crappy Phoenix heat

TA49 Bluetops,THDP, Duttneck. 100 octane 21 lbs boost. All the rest stock. I hope to turn up the boost with some good gas if the weather stays under 90 in a couple of weeks.

I now run VP110 (purple) since I can get it cheaper than I pay for Sunoco GT100 at the pump. I put very few miles on my car, so I don't mess with alky/propane etc.
Anyway...each car is different. With a set of 36's and 100-unleaded, you ought to be about to run 22-23psi. I ran 20-21psi with no problem on stock injectors with 100 in the tank. 20-21psi on the stock turbo is pretty much the limit. The TA49 will start leaving the stocker behind at that point. If you're going to run 25-27psi, I doubt the 36's will cut it with 100. I'd definitely consider a set of 50's or more octane.
As far as head gaskets...as long as you aren't seeing KR, you shouldn't have any problems. I bought my car off the original owner with 42k miles. The guy was in his 50's. The car was 100% bone stock and had the head gaskets replaced sometime in the late 80's after one blew. I've seen boost spikes of 30psi and not popped a HG. No problems running 25-27psi on stock HG's as long as the tune is good.
