I have searched high and low and have not found a difinitive answer. Sorry if this is a tired question.

I am adding a TA49, blue tops, smc alky, rebuilt street/strip BRF tranny from Dynotech this summer.

I want to know which way to go with the torque converter. I will rarely if ever race my car. It will get about 2,000 miles a year put on it.

What converter should I get that will help get the best out of the TA49 etc on the street?

Fresh D5
Restalled D5, if so what stall?
Red Stripe Street Brawler - 2500 stall
Orange Stripe Street Brawler 2,800 stall

others? I don't really want to spend more than $300.

Thanks in advance!

Joel

the "Red & Orange" stripe converters are restalled D5's

the best bang for the buck, performance wise, is the "Red" stripe

many will say a stock D5 is fine, but you will be faster with the higher stall

if you don't "need" a converter.....spend your money on your brakes

I put in a 9-11 2800 stall from PTS and a street strip trans from eric last year. Like nite and day from stock

Thanks for all the replies. What is the performance difference with the same combo but say a D5 and a 2,800 stall converter.

It seems that most of the responses were skewed one way or the other.

Thanks!

I depends how good your brakes are. If your brakes are good, you should be able to spool a TA49 with the stock converter. More stall makes it easier, to spool, though.

The "performance difference" meaning track ET is very small between a restalled D5 and a stock D5. The restalled D5 can make achieving optimum performance a little easier.

I would personally spend the money on something else, or save the money to buy a better converter (like a 9/11) when you upgrade to a larger turbo.

What are you looking for in a stall converter? If you're just looking for instant tire blazing throttle response then I would get a 3000 stall keeping in mind this would be too much converter for racing. I would go with stock but if I had to pick one then I pick a 2800..

I'm staying with the stock converter for now with the TA-49. Look here:

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/pictureguides/turboguide/turbos.html

The experienced people on this board talk in terms of combinations that work together efficiently. The stock D5 has long been a good, and proven complement to the Ta-49.

The 12 inch converter is reported to loose effeciency after 2800 stall. Someday I might go to 2800, but not until I've tried it with a stock converter and Ta-49. I've read that some with high stall converters loose traction too quickly without some suspension work.

The T+ has a quick spool function that might help enough to never need the higher stall....? Anybody have experience with this spool option?....Can you report to us?
