im not sure what the stock D5 is rated at but would upgrading to a 2200 stall converter be ok with a mostly stock car?

No, that would not be any better than what you already have. If you want to upgrade I would go with a restalled 26-2800 D5.

I have one for sale as a matter of fact:D

I have heard that people can get 22-2400 stall out of a stock D5

the reason for the question in the first place is that my fathers TTA is in the shop getting the tranny worked on. the person doing the work on the tranny said a 2200 stall would be good on our cars. he has worked on gn's before but i started to wonder if 2200 is even better than stock or if its worth it at all.

I would pass on the tranny guys offer. Make sure that he keeps your old converter in your car.

converter

I think 2200 is below the stock D5 stall speed. I had a D9 converter in mine before and it was no good. Have him send the stock D5 out to be restalled or how about one of those "orange stripe" converters I think they are 2800 stall. Do a search on converters.

I think the stock converter is around 2200. I had to switch to an "orange stripe" to build boost at the line with my TE44 at Bandimere. If you're going to switch converters, go at least to 2800 - or the max the 12" can go.

I would skip on the offer as well. You mentioned that the mechanic has worked on GN before. He should then know that the converter has a higher stall than other vehicles. I could stall mine at 2550 according to DirectScan. I now have a CK 9x11 3600 and its been one of the best upgrades I have done.

My opinon depending on the money you have i would go with a vigilante 9.5" at about 3200 stall, one of the if not the best upgrade i have done so far. a bit pricy i paid 968 for mine but let me tell you, you get that turbo spooled like an animal.

i will just keep the stock D5 and have it restalled. it was only able to get to about 1800 rpm in the TTA before we took it to the shop.

Just the other night I checked the stall speed of my D5 w/ the combo listed below and at 0 psi it was right at 2150-2175RPM as reported on DS. I've left the line before at 5 psi and it was showing in the 2400-2500's. Will be installing a Art Carr 3000-3200 and T66-BB when I get around to it so should be an interesting compare.

My stock D5 would stall at 2550 according to DS and that was on the line with real street tires at 1 lb of boost.
