I was using the torque specs on gnttype.org and cracked on of the grade 8 cam gear bolts using the specs givin(31 ft lbs). Are these specs correct? That seems like to high of foot lbs for such a small bolt. Is there another source for specs on the internet?

Thanks

I show 31# as well.

Did you clean the threads on the bolts/in the cam? If you have a tap & die set, gently chase the threads in the snout of the camshaft, and be sure to apply grease to the tap threads, so you're not taking off very much metal.

Are you sure your torque wrench is correct?

If you broke a grade 8 bolt at 31#, you have a serious problem with your torque wrench, OR a defective bolt.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I have a chart that shows the torque range for every size bolt and it states that, that size bolt should have a max torque to 25 ft lbs. So thats what has me confused.

quic87gn,

31 ft lbs is too much for a Grade 8 bolt that size no matter what the manual or GN TType says. I have always torqued them at 25 ft lbs and never had a problem. A little red locktite is a good idea too.
