I'm getting ready to install an OZ code (Specific to Hurst Olds) 200 R4 in my 442 G body cutlass. I've done this a few times before and as a starting point have always adjusted the TV cable for full extension at full throttle. I'm curious to know if doing this could cause damage to the internals. Last time I did this the trans shifted nice and hard on the 1st couple of runs but then later got mushy. After pulling the trans out and tearing it down I noticed that a few of the clutch plates were worn and there was clutch material in the pan. Any recommendations on the correct way to dial in the TV cable adjustment? Is full extension a bad idea?

The trans has a has a Trans go shift kit installed, hardened sun shell, hughes deep sump pan, hardened input shaft, superior super servo, 13 vane pump kit(yes I read the sticky), and I plan to use red eagle clutches.

Thanks for your input

DO NOT DRIVE WITH IT LOOOSENED, YOU WILL SMOKE THE TRANS SIMPLY GOING AROUND THE BLOCK!!!!!

Push the half moon tab in and push the inner cable adjustment towards the firewall to where the inner portion is in. Then go WOT it should ratchet it self into position.
Go WOT and see if it is as tight as possible W/O limiting WOT throttle travel if it is then push the half moon in and pull the inner out just enough the allo full WOT.
Normal for the bracket to flex a little at WOT

Make SURE you have the correct bracket and throttle linkage on the carb for the 2004r.

OK thanks..... I realize that you will smoke the trans if the cable is loose and this is not the case. This is not the issue.

The question I am trying to answer is can I damage it if it is too tight (full extension) at full throttle. My trans builder is telling me that having it too tight may be the reason why the clutches are wearing.....I have my doubts. Does everyone run thiers as tight as they can get it or do you back off on it? Does the GM service manual suggest a procedure?

Mine is set where the TV cable is fully-extended, just as WOT is achieved. So, if I open the throttle to WOT by hand, the TV cable is as tight as a guitar string, but does not limit the throttle from opening all the way. Hope that helps.

Running it tight will not damage the clutches...running it too loose will burn them.

Thanks for the input. If it doesn't shift right this time around I think It'll become my boat anchor.

You can loosen the cable 2 clicks and see if that helps much more than that will usually cause soft shifts
