Underhood light......how does it work?

I have an underhood light.....been at the bottom of my tool box for year....not sure were I got it. Dont think it was from a Turbo Buick. The cover is shinny not the dull finish of the original. I have put 12v to it and it does not light up. I put 12v to the bulb and that is ok. Does not look like a complex system. How does it go on and off when the hood is open or closed?

try changing the angle of how you're holding the assembly when you're testing it. You might have been holding it wrong when you tested it and the mercury switch though the hood was closed.

that mercury switch must be small. Might be broken. cant tell how to disassemble it.
