I installed my TA49 about 1000mi ago and still have not been able to really push it because of a fueling problem. (been too cold to crawl under lately. I have the speed bug bad. After I get the fuel problem fixed I am thinking of jumping up to a good powerfull street Turbo that matches my combo. The converter stall and Injectors are probably my limiting factors. What are some good choices?

Here is my set up.
50#'s
Eric's Alky chip and extender chip,
PTE FM
RJC PP
PTS Extreme S/S trans
9X11 3000 Stall conveter
TA49
Trans +
3" Impalla MAF
RJC billet pullies
Razor's Prog Alky
red'sfuel pump and hot wire kit
billet fpr
scanmaster
Electronic boost control
135,000 miles/new timing set

TIA

I have a very similar combo to yours.(A bit more stall)----i went from a 44 to a te-62.The power diff. is hard to believe----spool is on the money.I am running similar times to my 44 on 8 psi less(added heads and cam)---but the car is stronger on 18 psi than it was on 26-27 psi w/ the 44.

I always thought the ta-49/te-44 was a "good powerful street turbo".
I would get your fueling issue resolved, tune the car to its maximum potential and then see if you need (want) a new turbo.

I am debating the want/need issue myself. I just need to talk the wife into $2000 for a new turbo/converter package.

If anyone is in the market for a low mile (~1000 mi) TA49, let me know and maybe we can work something out. I called John Craig today and I think I am going to move up.

I will break out the camera tommorow. If you give me your zip I can get a close estimate from the UPS site. The Turbo is still on my car.

The turbo is a standard new TA49 from PTE. It has a 3'' and 2" In and out, .63 precision exhaust housing. The wheels are what ever PTE puts on their standard TA49.
I checked the UPS site and I estimated 18lbs to your Zip and it shows $18.37 for a 3 day shipment.
Thanks,
Rich
I will try to get some pictures tomorrow.

Hi Jim,
Yes your GN looked awesome that last time I saw you run at Piedmont. You get any quicker and they are going to kick you off the track. lol.

As far as my turbo selection goes, I am not sure I have enough stall to support the TE61 or GT 61. You have 3200 and I have only 3000. John Craig said that the PT53 would work very nice for my combo, It has a very nice turbine and will spool great and make good power on the street and the track.
I am still doing my home work because I don't want to spend $795 on a turbo every 1000 miles.

The issue with my TA49 is that I have almost no lag and can't put any power to the road from dig, just fry the tires. I know I need better tires, I am running BF goodrich 265-15 regular radials. It doesn't help that they are only 26".
I really need some help selecting a good 28" tire that will fit without rubbing on my stock GN steel wheels.'

I still have that flakey fuel problem that I was experiencing at Piedmont when you were there. With the fuel pressure gauge hooked up I have identified the issue. Under boost the fuel pressure will not go above 55#. The needle on the gauge starts to get erattic back and forth but will not go over 55# so I really have never tested the TA49 yet. I turned up the FP to 70lbs at idle just to see if it was the regulater and it wicked right up. The problem only shows up under boost which tells me that is a volume problem. It has been to cold to crawl around the car but I know I will find the cause.

Rich---Post your problem in the General Turbo Buick Technical section and see if anyone can suggest a solution. Too cold out there to be crawling around the car. :) You need to get the fueling problem fixed before buying a larger turbo.
We'll have to make a trip to Piedmont when you get the car running correctly.

You are right about fixing the fuel issue before I move up in turbo size. Is Piedmont closed for the winter?

Hey 85 ttypewh1,
Jim was right but that didn't stop me from ordering a CPT65BB from JC yesterday.

;)
Soooooooooo, If you are still interested in the TA49 let me know. I sent you a PM but I guess you never got it.:)

Piedmont is closed.

Wow, a CPT65BB! Hope you get the fuel problem fixed before installing it. :)

I most certainly Will! I am out under the car as we speak-so far everything looks ok--no pinched lines, new fuel filter, ground on trans is tight. May have to use up some gas and drop the tank.

BTW, Jack is putting a 60 wheel on my BB CPT65 for quicker spool along with the 60's housing. He said since I run mostly 1/8 mile and stop light racing It should spool killer and be a real deamon with my 3000 9X11. If I find I want more top end power, he can put the normal 61 wheel on and change to an 80's housing.
I also ordered a set of 10" wide rear steel GN wheels from G-body to go with the MT ET street radials I ordered;) .

I have been talking to a local turbo shop and i will be stopping by sometime this week, he said he wants to show me some options on different turbos. But please email me some pics, Thanks greg.
