What Is Your Opinion Of The Meanest Muscle Cars

I always thought the 70 Chevelle LS6 was the baddest.

I'll disagree on the LS6 - I owned one. Their reputation is a tad exaggerated simply because all the world loves the Chevelle. If it were 1970 all over again I would consider the 'Hemi 'Cuda or Buick GSX before the Chevelle.

True, they were one of the quickest mass produced musclecars of that era, but there were several other musclecars that were as quick or quicker. Even GM's Buick GSX was a better street musclecar.

What I did not like about the LS6 was that the torque curve was not as flat as I would have liked. On the few occassions I raced it, I noticed that the LS6/L72 guys were always having to chase the Buick and Mopar guys down on the big end 0f the track. That's actually what got me interested in Mopars.

My 69 Roadrunner with the 440-6bbl was quicker than my LS6 and was quite frankly a better/meaner street car IMO. I beleieve the " 50 fastest" list also lists several cars ahead of the Chevelle also, including the 440/6 cars.

IMO the 69 B-body 440- six pack cars were the ultimate mass produced musclecar period. Amazing torque and was really purpose built for street racing. Fiberglass lift off hood - lighter weight plain steel wheels, just a no frills racer.

Here are my non mass produced favorites and they are absolute LS6 killers.

Well I would honestly have to say

1. 86-87 TRs

2. GNX (only second due to the price!)

3. 70-72 Buick GS

4. 70-72 GSX (again due to the price)

5. 70-72 Olds 442

I'm kinda biased though!!!

Again just my opinion, but honestly I have owned quite a few cars over the years and every time I drive a TR I cannot think of a car I had rather own. So the 86-87 TRs are dream cars for me!!!

The standard engine was the 350-horse 455, which also delivered a whopping 510 ft-lbs of torque. The Stage-1 455 (rated at a conservative 360 hp/510 ft-lb torque) was the optional engine, and in fact was installed in the majority of GSX's (400 of 678). A Hurst shifted Muncie close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission was standard equipment, with the 3-speed automatic TH-400 available at extra cost.

350HP..... The 450hp 454 LS6 Chevelle spanked the GSX.

I dont know if there erver was such a beast, but I would love to have a black 69 charger with a hemi and 4 speed. GSXs are sweet too.

Actually they were 427 side oilers NOT SCJ's .. The super cobra jets were not even around in 63.. and they were not cross rams. they were inline 2 four bbls..

66 big block Vette. I tried catching one once and he just pulled away.....

I had a special order 65 Vette Conv. 396 radio heater delete with 4sp. and 456 gears.

With 1.7 roller rockers, headers and slicks it ran 11.90s.

Vettes are considered sports cars more than muscle cars. Debatable.

Wish I still had it.

had one, loved it. Brute torque!!!! 3rd gear, 3500 rpm, dump the clutch and lay rubber until I hit 4th at about 70-75mph. Bone stock only +/- 335 hp but had 510 ft lbs torque at like 1800 rpm.

Most of the HP numbers from back then were marketing BS, so you can't judge a musclecar by its HP rating.

Example:
A 275 HP 340 cuda was usually as quick, if not quicker than a 335 HP 383 cuda though it weighed within 100lbs and had 60 "less HP".

This was the HP rating from the same MFG in the Same car. Imagine comparing Different MFG's and Different cars. You can't.

I agree with Tracy- the 69 Roadrunner 440 6 barrel (I own one!), anything with a Hemi in it, and the Buick 455 Stage 1, and the Olds 442 W30!

What a car..I'm sure you agree! Absolutely addicting to drive.

As much as I love the GN - The Roadie is my favorite. Enjoy it as long as you can!

Without a doubt 1969 Road Runner 440+6. I had a 69 383 4-speed. With a 292 cam and 4.56's, it ran mid 12's. I still want a 1970 GS 455 Stage 1. For the record the 455 Stage 1 beat the 454 LS6. Now the engine that was built more like the LS6 was the 455 Stage 2, and I am sure most of us know what those did.
I like the early 60's factory drag cars too. 1964 Dodge Polara, Fairlane Thunderbolt, Pontiac Tin Indian.

I have never owned a muscle car just a 75 Chevy 10 P/U with a '73 454 truck engine that was blue printed. That was a brick too on top end but I did have fun with camaros and Ford LTDs and Gran Torinos. I have had my friends that raced me at starting at highway speeds tell me I reached 140 MPH!
I have posted this link before but here it is again. Top 50 muscle cars from the 60's to the 90's.
They had to sell so many at dealerships to qualify as a street car in racing. Yeah right, it was a race car right off of the dealer's lot! I don't know why the 63 Ford Thunderbolt didn't make this list though.
