What's the secret to removing the rear brake cylinder?

I want to replace the rear brake cylinders on my 87 GN with S10 cylinders. How do you get that clip off the back of the cylinder so you can pull it through? I don't have any special tools. Is there one? I ended up beating the old one up but I got it. There must be a better way.

Thanks!

an awl or straight pick from back side ...push awl into slots and move awl handle toward center and the clip tabs will release

There's a little inexpensive tool that works ok but they still suck. My personal #1 on the list of the stupidest things about a TB. 2 bolts were fine for like 60 years then they decide to do this abortion.

Been a while since I messed with one. Isn't it almost like 6 gallons of crap in a 5 gallon bucket? Iirc the cylinder has no extra room to make its escape.

I remember getting so frustrated with my passenger side and trying to pry it off with a screw driver for like 30 min . I had to walk away have a beer then came back to it and popped both sides off in less then 5 min lol .

It's easy, yoneed to pick up a tool that's called "Brake Cylinder Retaining Ring Remover...You can pick this up at NAPA auto parts. It cost$9.99 and just go and ask for part #776-9403. Or if you Buy Lisle the part # 18800, or Power Built #648413. This tool will make your life soooo easy

I made a vidio for GM X and J model cars, just havent loaded it yet, but here are some pictures of the tool and the wheel cylinder in use. just stick the tool it has 2 notches and you just turn the handle to open and close the retainer

That does make it look easy. I spent all day on the right rear. If that cuts my time in half tomorrow, I'll buy it!

I couldn't get that tool to work for me, so I used a large socket & C clamped it down to release the pressure on the clip. Brake cylinder popped right off ....easy peasy

Looks like that would work too. Not a bad job putting them back on. Lots of cuss words getting it off.

This sounds like a good job for that nephew of yours! Tell him if he does a good job you'll let him clean the undercarriage.

Haha! Exactly!
KC87 I saved the left drivers side rear for him. He’s coming back this weekend and we will take the car to the strip AFTER he changes it out. Cars have better times at the track with a clean undercarriage don’t they? (Wink wink!)

Dude at Napa had no idea what part number that was. I see Walmart carries the Powerbuilt number

As stated before, a large socket and C clamp are your friends and will make easy work of this job! ;)
