Ok, guys I need some help. I know this aint excatly the place to ask but I need help. I got a 88 Buick Skylark with a 2.5L but has some minute issues. I got this car in a trade deal for doing some work on a friends car. When he would crank the car it would blow white smoke out the tail pipe. He said he was told it would need the "lower set" changed. Upon looking for parts I don't see where a "lower set" is available for this car. The engine has 74K miles on it. I think maybe coolant is leaking is the combustion chambers and thats where the white smoke is coming from. I don't know how long the car was sitting in his yard but I know it has been in mine for a year.

Here recently we have a baby on the way and I need to get this car going now. We charged the battery and primed the engine. It fired and started up fine. Although the idle wasn't where it should be the engine can keep itself running w/o any help. For the past week I have cranked the engine up and let it run until normal temp. Not yet has it run hot or began blowing white smoke again. I have bought all new head gasket, intake and exhaust gasket, VC gasket and everything else to tear it down. But I haven't done so b/c it hasn't been blowing white smoke.

Where here is the problem. Last Saturday I took it down the road for a test drive. The air filter was nasty so I left it and the air filter housing top off. We drove it down the road and pulled back in the drive. The tranny changed gears without any problems. I never noticed any smoke or engine hesitation. After pulling back up in the drive I raised the hood and oil had blown up through the intake and splattered everything in the engine compartment. The PCV is sucking so I'm pretty sure the crankcase has ventilation. I have sprayed all the vacuum lines to check for leaks.

I had checked the oil before cranking the engine but I didn't pay attention if it was overfilled. Well after driving the car and oil was splattered everywhere I did notice the level of the oil was about 1 to 1 1/2 quarts too high. Would this cause the oil the come up through the intake and out the throttle body? Why wouldn't it have done it all the other times I cranked the car for long periods of time? On occassion I did rev the engine so why no oil platter then? Do you guys think I have other bigger problems? What about the white smoke coming out of the tail pipe? Can you guys share some insight with me?

If it was 1 1/2 to 2 quarts overfull, it would smoke...

...and blow oil out. I would pull the plugs and pressure test the cooling system (make sure it's full to test it). If there is any leak to the combustion chamber, it should show up in the cylinders shortly. If it passes that test, go ahead and change the oil, and drive it some more. 2.5s are kinda prone to cracking cylinder heads when overheated, but this doesn't sound like an overheat problem. They only hold 4 quarts of oil, so 2 quarts would be half again as much as what it's supposed to have.
