Need a new cat-back exhaust system for my beloved basket case.

But I cannot find the Y that takes the single outlet from the catalytic converter into the 2 pipes for the standard cat back system.

Where can I get the part.

FlowMaster does not make one.

Can I flip a collector, if so, how far apart should the y be?

Also, between the Flowmaster and the Hooker systems which would you choose?

Thanks

Comes with the Hooker system

I can't really help you find the piece seperately but I can tell you that it is supplied as part of the Hooker cat-back system. I installed mine a couple weeks ago. Nice fit. The only thing I want to change is my hangers behind the rear wheels. I think I'm picking up some vibration from them. I want to try some softer, thicker grommet material to isolate the exhaust a little better.

Cool, I was under the impression the Hooker did not come with it either.

How does the Hooker system sound? and is it giving enough back pressure to maintain performance.

I know the ATR pitbull is the primo system, but I am leaning towards the Hooker or Flowmaster, definately Hooker if it comes with the Y, and saves me that heartache.

Thanks

1. Turbo's HATE ALL BACKPRESSURE...The turbo itself will create all of the backpressure you could ever need, open is the fastest way to go.

2. Hooker does come with the y-pipe... Full throttle speed and style sells the Y pipe by itself if you want one.

Thanks for the info, I am new to GN's and feeling my way through.

The local expert has been guiding me in directions I am not sure I agree with, steered me away from 3 inch exhausts, wants me to put a smaller CAM in, and remove the 36# injectors.

So I am turning to this board for second opinions before I do anything.

OMG don't listen to him.

Big injectors are GOOD.

What cam do you have?? the stocker is good for 11's EASY

If you can afford 3 in. their's nothing wrong with it, you might not need it depending on your goals but it won't hurt you at all...The Hooker is a very good system for the price.

Unfortunately, I don't know what cam I have, this is part of why I refer to it as a "Basket Case".

I acquired the car about 3 months ago, and love it, it's previous owner also loved it, but he loved it hard and rough. Lots of homemade mods, no regard for doing it "right" or keeping records. I am currently looking for a passenger side fendwall to replace the one he cut a HUGE hole in to vent the turbo

The mechanic who installed the cam does not know which one it was, but repeatedly has told me "it is too damn big" and "has to come out", and says that the Ford Blue Top 36# injectors are wrong for the car.

I understand the desire to have a stock GN, but in this case I would like to try to work with the parts that are in the vehicle to see what she can do.

But I am dreading having to remove the cam just to find out what it is in order to have a chip burned.

Screw that...36's are fine lots of people make chips for em for our cars.

I have a question on the cam, if he put it in and he says it's to big then how the hell does he not know what size it is??? I think you need a new mechanic.

Whatever you end up doing please don't put it back to stock, stock is boring and weak...And it doesn't do much for the value on these cars, you're better off having fun with it.

I agree, don't listen to him.

Don't pay any attention to him. Big injectors won't hurt at all as long as you have a chip for them. Before long you'll be wanting bigger ones.:D You'll have "injector envy".:D :D Nothing wrong with 3" exhaust. I've heard they can be loud but some of the 2-1/2" systems aren't too quiet, either. Check the archives for posts about different stuff. Plenty of info (and opinions) on what works and what doesn't. Read up and make your choices. If your car has a stock cam and it's OK, leave it alone. Plenty of quick cars with stock cams and everybody knows them. The best thing you can do for yourself is to read up on this board and GNTTYPE.org and the other two big boards. Tons of info out there. Just don't get too weighed down with the politics on the other boards. The info is still good. This board is my favorite but I still go to the others for info sometimes. If you're looking for parts, check out their vendor specials, too. Not everybody runs them on all three boards.

BTW, I like the sound of the Hooker system and the quality was good. Installation is easier w/2 guys. Try and get your tailpipes even. That was tough on mine. I get a little drone but I want to try to isolate the tailpipe hangers a little better. Mine came with the Aerochamber mufflers. I bought it through Summit a year ago. $259. I would check the supporting TB vendors to see if anyone has a comparable price.

I agree, I will give him some room to not know what CAM, it was several years ago that it was installed.

I was contactting him to try to map out what mods were done, from this point forward, primarilly I am my own mechanic, and if I get in too much of a jam, I have family members who own a repair place and have raced their entire lives

I really do not mean to dis the guy who did the previous work, he truly knows these cars inside and out, I just think we have a diference in opinions on what should be done

I went out to the Holley Site (Hooker Section) and from what I could tell, the Hooker system is a dual exhaust system. The Flowmaster system uses a single 80 Series Crossflow muffler which will fit snuggly in place where the stock muffler was.

Did you have any problems with the dual mufflers hanging too low and scraping, or do the Hooker's snug up under the car pretty well.

I may sound picky, but I want to know hat to expect with either system.

go with the hooker exhaust over the flowmaster for sure. much better flowing system and you wont have any problems with clearance either. the hooker is probabbly the best system for your money.:D

What is the sound of the Hookers, I'm hoping it is not too quiet, I'd like something with a little bollocks. but at the same time, I'd like to be able to hear the radio when not WOT.

A little louder than stock

Fitment is good. The mufflers look like they belong there. Sound is louder than stock but not too loud.

ATR has the Y pipe, in several sizes to match different Cats. They also have replacement exhaust systems, from the heads back or from the Cat back, in stainless or non-stainless, several sizes of pipe.

Flowmaster exhaust

hey guys

My car has had the Flowmaster exhaust on it since i have owned the car from 99. I like the sound of the flowmaster system. BTW the flowmaster cat back has the same exact size piping from the convert to the muffler as the hooker and the tail pipes are the same size. Another reason i like the Flowmaster exhaust is the it sits in the same location as the stock system does and it does not hang down and look tacky from behind the car. From a airflow standpoint i don't see what the difference would be from the flowmaster crossflow VS the single mufflers on the hooker system. The newer F- bodies use that style exhaust with a single pipe from the converter and they breath just fine

Turbos don't like baffled mufflers...Flowmasters are great on NA motors, but not optimum for turbo cars.

There's a guy on the "other" board that could only build 2-3 PSI brake boosting it with flowmasters and could build like 10 or something after changing to a non-baffled muffler.

The Hooker catback is great. It's inexpensive and the aerochamber mufflers actually flow pretty good. Much better than stock.
I'd coat the exhaust w/ some high temp paint just to add some life to it. Mine is uncoated, and it has been on the car for nearly 5 years. There is no rust on it at all, and I live in hot and humid Houston, TX.

I have a new direction I am going in...

Why looking for the Y, spoke to the people at http://www.fullthrottlespeed.com. They have a cat-back system that I am going to go with, here is the description:

2 3/4 dual exhaust systems, all mandrel bent dual exhaust. Y pipe with 4 bolt flange and tail pipes with hardware that exits in the stock location. No mufflers with these bu tthey use STANDARD / COMMON offset in / center out 3" "turbo" style mufflers, (pipes are expenaded to 3"). Ultra flow, race magnum, flowmaster, super turbo, borla everyone make them and they all fit. Aluminized heavy wall tube bigger and much nicer than most others.

I like the larger pipe diameter, and the price is do-able, just a bit more than the Hooker's once I purchase the mufflers which don't come with it.

In addition, the guy from fullthrottlespeed spent a lot of time with me on the phone and was majorly helpful, that meant a lot, because with doing the work myself, it would be good to have a comapny I could call if I run into troubles.

So now the thread changes from, can't find a Y to which 3 inch non-chambered turbo style mufflers to go with this system.

The hooker looks and sounds great for $250 you can't beat it. AS for the 36lbs injectors he's right get them out asap and send them to me i'll put them to good use :D.
