Ok, here we go......First, I didn't photograph the install very well because I thought the installation of this parking brake kit was going to be an easy, straight forward install, but it wasn't. Also there are no other posts on this forum (that I have found) nor any useful ones online to follow that was specified for G-Body vehicles.
Getting started:
The kit I used:
Wilwood Parking Brake Kit, P/N 330-9371
The initial installation of the cables are straight forward, (I followed the beginning steps exactly per the directions). After the cables are assembled, start from the rear wheel and attach the clevis onto the parking brake lever. Run the cables to the front of the car following the original parking brake path.
This is where I changed things up a bit. The kit also uses another clevis with a pin and cable block assembly on the end that attaches to the foot petal or hand brake of the vehicle. The PROBLEM is that the clevis doesn't adapt to the OEM foot brake setup. And even if it did, you would have to go ALL THE WAY into the interior for the attachment (which would be a PITA since a portion of the parking brake line runs through the frame of the car).
1st Solution:
I purchased a
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly, P/N S-8074 for $12.94 (Pictured Below).
============================================================================================================================================================================
I then used the above Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly with the Cable Block Assembly and Clevis Assembly (Pictured below, TOP). The Cable Block Assembly and Clevis Assembly was included in the Wilwood Parking Brake Kit.
===========================================================================================================================================================================
From here, I removed the Clevis Assembly (Pictured Below, TOP). I then screwed the
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly, P/N S-8074 into the Cable Block Assembly (Pictured Below, BOTTOM).
============================================================================================================================================================================
From here, I then "cut" the factory parking brake line around the cross member (Cut according to your preference).
A simple explanation of the above Pic, (bottom assembly) is:
- The Cable Block Assembly (left side) attaches to the new parking brake cables coming from the rear of the vehicle. (3rd picture above)
- The
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly (right side) attaches to the OEM Brake Cable Line
(the line that was cut). The "cut" OEM Parking Brake line is to be inserted into the hole of the conical side of the Union Assembly. Tighten the 2 setscrews to hold it firmly in place.
Theoretically this "will" work. The problem I had with this, was that it was very, very hard to adjust the Cable Block Assembly which adds or subtracts tension of the brake. This was especially difficult with the limited space I had to work in due to the location of where I mounted the Housing End Adjuster Bracket Assembly. So, I came up with an simple tweak to make it work better.....
==============================================================================
To ease the hardship of trying to adjust the tension (while being confined to a small working area), I found it easier to use the original Clevis Assembly (that I previously discarded). There is a "free=spinning" hex just before the "u-shaped" area of the Clevis. I went back to using this vendor supplied Clevis Assembly , and purchased a
Rod End (Pictured Below) Note: It has a thread of 5/16-24.
Description: QA1 Rod End, 5/16-24 Thread
P/N: GFR5T
Price: $9.97

From here I assembled the 3 parts together like this (Forgot to show pin):
Pictured above (starting from left to right), we have:
(Left) - The
Clevis Assembly = Screws into the "Adjustment Block" (allows attachment of the new / aftermarket rear brake cables from the Adjustment Block to the
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly.
(Middle) - The
Rod End = Screwed onto the
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly (Serves as the "adapter" to allow the Clevis Assembly to attach to the
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly)
(Right) -
Lokar Parking Brake Cable Replacement Wire Union Assembly = Attaches the newly cut stock brake line to be connected to the
Rod End.
