Well the big factor relies on the fact that HP is related to the product of torque and RPM (HP is approximately equal to Torque (lb-ft)*RPM/5252). Those little DOHC engines rev a lot higher than our pushrod Buicks. Therefore, they have the potential to make more horsepower even while making less torque.
