Any Lineman here?

I'm just a regular construction electrician not in the same ballpark as a lineman..
Your a smart guy I'm sure you'll do fine on the interview n make it to the climbing program wich shouldn't be a problem for you based on that video you posted here a while back of you lifting weights..
Its admirable to be able to change careers like that mid stream, what do you do now and why the change? You doing this down in Miami? I'd have a heat stroke just putting on the harness. Good luck man go get it!

Hey buddy, I actually work for the utility company here in Florida I'm a tech specialist basically assist the senior Engineer's in mapping plans and Transformer locations for new construction. It's just boring as heck I'm stuck in front of a computer no excitement... I have been trying to get into the Pole Climbing School for almost 8 yrs i finally got the call this morning..I usually do fairly well on interview so I'm just looking forward to the Pole Climbing School. Yea i'm in shape but most of the Senior lineman state its 95% legs not much else. The folks in my office are like why the hell would you want to be a lineman?! For me i guess its the excitement or the rush i guess.

My father in law has worked for our power company for almost 40 years. He was a lineman for most of it but now that he is turning 60 he has been running the pole digging truck for the last 15 years. He goes on a lot of emergency trips. Hurricanes, ice storms and to the aftermath of tornados. He went out to the east coast after Sandy hit. He seems to love his job. Hasn't ever missed a day of work. Has the most seniority and the power company is the oldest power supplier in the state of Indiana. It was the first power company and it is still in business today. Pretty impressive company.

The climbing part takes some getting used to. Once you are in the field you won't really have to climb that much unless your in right of way. With phone company I have gaffed 2 times in the last 5 years.

Glen Campbell would be able to help you: "I am a lineman for the county." :D (sung very softly)

My buddy is a lineman and I'll tell ya what he makes a killin' when he goes out on "storm". But his wife is always out spending it while he's out!

Climbing school isnt that bad as long as your not overweight. Most utilities use climbing school as a weed out process. During your training, remember there's a million ways to complete the same task. Ask questions and never say I know I know.......then go up in the bucket and set the world on fire.

Tell you what Pole Climbing school was extremely hard. They set it up as a boot camp to weed out the weak. We started out with 23 and we ended with 12. I passed though! I`m 40 feet certified waiting on an apprentice position to open up now.

Good for you man, you'll be raking it in every time a storm hits once you do get out there.... congrats!
Ill be getting into a couple cold ones in about 30 minutes be sending cheers your way....

I worked for a company out of N.H. in the 60s.Never had a climbing school. It was on the job training.I was just learning when The lay off came.Dont hug the pole or ur coming down w/splinters.Play time was who could come down the fastest.Good luck.Your gonna make some coins for sure.

I work for ComEd and I saw their climbing school. Those guys are nuts. The first pole I think is 40 feet and then 70 and ther is one after that. I watched the guy climb the pole then climb over the top and back down. I will stay in the garage working on the trucks. Although the Bronto trucks are a trip if you have to fly the boom to 200feet.
Congrats. Just try to get with one of the older line guys and then listen and pick his brain. Good luck and get ready for some good overtime. and be careful
