My friend's 87 blew the gasket on the bottom of the turbo. After replacing it the car has no boost. It feels very restricted. The cat appears to have a hole and sounds like a tea kettle. Has this happened to anyone? Can the cat be the problem? I appreciate the feedback.

Depends.

If the cat only has a hole in it, No. If the cat is stopped up, Yes.

Got to have flow.

Short answer is yes.
If the cat has been overheated, the brick can melt, causing serious backpressure.
Pull the cat off the dp, and see if the boost comes back.
A hole could mean it was seriously clogged, and the shell melted from extreme heat. As in over 1000*F.

^^ as he said ... cat ceramic core can melt and plug up

Wow! Thanks! We will pull it off after work and see. Im pretty sure this is the problem.

The cat was definitely the problem. The car is now running better than ever. Thanks again!
