Big Stuff 3 Tech Support

Mike,

Few ?'s (I figured it would be best asked here to give a reference for others)

- I have the very frist GEN1 unit and bought it from PTE. Is it B2B or sequential?
- Any software/firmware updates for the GEN1 unit?
- Any future plans to will allow use of a 3.5bar MAP? Going from 3 bar to 5 makes you loose a lot of resolution and most of us run 35psi or less. 3.5bar would be PERFECT.

Thanks in advance.

The GEN 1......is B2B
No Software updates or plans for 3.5 bar map that I am aware of....might want to call Pete Barton at PTE.

Intersting. Check out the email sent to me by John Meany:

I have the old GEN1 B2B unit for my Turbo Buick and was wondering if I can use the new version of BigComm on your website with it? I like the ability to change which graphs I can see in the "view log" window when reviewing a file. But I dont want it to screw up my calibrations or my computer since I know the new version is for SFI GEN3 units.

Also, do you have any firmware updates for the GEN1 B2B unit?

Thank you,

Probably would be safe to review the logs offline with the latest BigComm, however, I don’t think I would make calibration changes. The GEN1 ECU is sequential, not B2B.

JM

So Joe Lubrant tells me B2B, John Meany tells me sequential.

The Gen 1 Big Stuff ECU is nothing more than an old FAST circuit board with a few minor tweaks and different firmware, so it could be B2B or sequential.

All I can tell you is the early Gen 1 's I was selling at PTE were suposedly B2B as that is what I was told at that time. If they were Sequential great.

All connections etc were mostly duplicate of Fel-Pro / Fast older Units for obvious reasons.

Fel-Pro/Fast B2B units could be upgraded to Sequential for added cost $$. Even if it were Sequential...it does not have individual Cylinder Spark or Fuel Control, Unless you opted for another $$$ Upgrade. Not sure what Gen 1 John M. offered for the Gen 1??? ...Doubt Individual Fuel & Spark was available for Gen 1.......it was for sure in the Gen 3.
In that event I don't see any advantage of Gen 1 either way as B2B or Sequential.

When the Newer Gen 3 software came out...I called John M. and ask him if the Gen 3 Software was Transparent with the Gen 1 units, and he said ""I Don't Know""

As far as the software........Guy's that were Born and Raised with DOS probably Love It......I personally do not.

Just my $.02

Joe, I recall at Salem last year you said you were really beginning to like the system as you were working on Tony O's car, and that car going faster with every round. Are you saying you don't like it now? Maybe I am mistaken.

Tony Has A GEN 3 not a Gen 1 :)

Sparky_wp - do you know the answer to the above? If not, who can I contact to find out for sure if I have a B2B or sequential unit?

If you gave John the information off of your Gen 1 box and John is telling you that it is in fact Sequential, then it is Sequential.
The other option you have is to send the box to John and have him check it internally.
I could suggest some things to check electrically that may determine whether or not it is sequential, if you’d like to give me a call.
I hope this helps,
Sparky

BS3/Scanmaster

Do you still need a Scanmaster with the BS3 system? What other monitoring would anyone reccomend? I'd like to be able to monitor knock another way (record during runs) along with the knock and boost gauge on the piller.

It will not actually work because the scanmaster reads information off the stock computer. Since you have an aftermarket ecu the scanmaster will not work.

BS3 Ablilities

I'd like to be able to record knock during runs along with the knock and boost gauge on the piller. Is that possible with BS3? Are there any guide lines/info already that are available to new BS3 users? Where can I get some info like that?

Since you bought the car from Harry and they are probably the biggest BS3 dealer, I would run it by him. I am sure Michael could chime in with some ideas as well. I don't know if you can set the BS3's internal data logger to record the knock retard. Harry is your man!

Thanks again John.

FWIW, my gen1 does NOT record KR. It has a graph for it, but never picks it up. I used the PTE harness that came with the computer when I purchased it from them. I have a knock gauge on my dash to watch instead.

PS I wish someone knew 100% for sure if my gen1 is B2B or Sequential.

What kind oif things can be controlled with the BIG STUFF GEN3 . How is the ign. phased to the ECM , if one where using a crank trigger and msd sensor like mine and a distributor, .How does this ECM compare to FAST XFI and GEN7 when converting to a distributor, is it in the class , or a knotch down. What would be the reason one would chose BS3 over XFI-GEN7, all three seem to be comparable in price. Does BS3 use wideband 02. I am asking alot of questions because I havent heard much on the BS3 . Maybe someone that sells and installs/tunes them can chime in with their perspective of the questions I have asked. I appreciate any responses in advance. Thanks JEFF, THE tb.com CRANK TRIGGER WHEEL SPECIALIST with over 27 years experience on the fastest cars in AMERICA

Jeff,
Give V6racer a PM about those question and the BS. He had issues making the Dist strategy to work. Ugraded to XFI and he was running right away. GEN 7 will also run the dist no problem.

now you know why i switched to a xfi......nobody seems to know anything about bs3.

i got tired of the neverending runaround

I used to have the BS3. I really liked it but I couldn't swap over to a stock crankshaft sensor/distributor setup. I tried working with JM on the setup and went round and round trying different things and in the end couldn't make it work and the responses to my questions quit. I sold it and called Cal for an XFI and within two days I recieved it and was running. If I had a V8 turbo setup I would use the BS3 because the software and features seemed to sway to that type of setup.
