billet roller cam thrust

.004-.007" mesured by using a dial indicator in the back of the timing gears through the hole in the lifter valley, after the timing cover is torqued down with a gasket

Are you saying to put the dial indicator in contact with the timing gear, and slide the cam back and forth to check thrust?

You can do it on the front of the timing gear, with the front cover off, but that won't work if you use the front cover to set the clearance. You can do it at the back of the cam, with plug out of the cam bore. Or you can do it through the lifter valley, putting the dial indicator against the back of a cam lobe. (pull a lifter?) Just wherever you can most easily get to the cam.
