All tanks are the same size for all 86-87 TRs and GNs?

I ran out of gas on E thinking I had 3 gallons left. Usually, when I fill up on E, I can olny fill to 15 gallons before the auto shut off. So i figure I have 3 gallons left before I run out (18 gallon tank). I think I was getting a lot closer to running out than I thought and that my tank capacity is really about 16 gallons max. Any other thoughts?

You have to consider how far down does the fuel sock sits in the tank. That would probably account why you only fill 15 gallons when the tank is supposedly empty according to the fuel gauge.

Also I think the angle of the fuel float with respect to the sender in the tank is a factor to consider as it changes as it descends and the fuel gauge will not reflect that same linear reading as when the tank is full.
