Subject: ** GNTTYPE SHUTTING DOWN, MOVING **

The www.gnttype.org site, as well as all boards and mailing lists which run
on
it will be shut down by midnight on Friday, April 30, 2004 Pacific time.

This has been coming for some time. The cost of maintaining the current site
at
its current location has just become too overwhelming. Changes in the TR
world
and the economy in general have changed what resources there are in the
Buick
power world to help sponsor and support things such as GNTTYPE. My personal
health took a few hard blows during the last several years, which made being
involved with the site impossible for a time. Myself and the two other
people
who have been running and managing GNTTYPE are all very busy with other
aspects
of our lives and can't devote our full attention to it. Ken with Motron and
with his job that is tied closely to the Gulf War effort.

At this time, the cost of maintaining the server at its current location i
simply isn't sensical. And there aren't many sponsors or much other revenue
coming in. However, its clear that there is a great desire to have this site
and its information continue. So there is a plan to move forward:

- - Move the site contents to a new server at a new location which will cost
less for network service.

- - Move the board to a new platform. This has been helped immensely by Mike
Licht and his company Full Throttle Speed and Style which is setting up a
new
board with vBulletin. This is the main board platform used by most sites
universally.

- - At this time the list will continue, but not be linked to the board. We
hope that the board will become a preferred format. Not so much because it
is
neccessarily 'better', but a good board using good software does allow use
of
'appropriate' pictures and diagrams, as well as advertising space.

Note that GNTTYPE, since the early days, has always been _MUCH_ more than
just
a discussion group or a web site. Its a least a bit of both and certainly
the
oldest one for the TR marque on the 'net. By the response in contributions
its
clear that there is support in the community for its continued existance. If
you are someone that has real web authoring talent, and wants to be part of
the team to help overhaul and maintain the GNTTYPE site a bit as it
progresses
forward, drop me a line at keller_s@swbell.net. We need some good TR nuts
who
know how to drive the web, too, to help behind the scenes.

I can't say when the new site will be ready for air. Could be a day. Could
be a month or more. No matter what, the change is needed and its for the
best.

Scott - keller_s@swbell.net

Thanks for the update Ken.

Any idea when gnttype.org will be back up. This site has always been a bible of help and resources. Many thanks goes out to those who work so hard to keep this up and running. It has been a great help to newbies, veterans and perspective owners alike.

Ken,

I emailed Scott to see what it would take to get gnttype.org back up and running. My company is a full service ISP so I hope we can work something out. I hope to hear back from him.

Ken and Scott if there is anything I can do to help please dont hesitate to call or email me.
(sent you email w/info)

It's already on a new box with bandwidth ... the biggest hurdle will be to get the DNS repointed and the new software all stable.

It just takes time and I'm sure that Scott would love some extra hands.

There's no reason that the web site won't be back up next week. The mailing list might take a bit longer.

Ken,
Changing the DNS should be the easiest part. The only thing you need to do is log into your registrar account (network solutions, register.com, bulk register, etc.) and point the A record to the new IP address. The change can take up to 48 hours but usually resolves in less than a day.

Setting up the site on the new webserver and database stuff would be the most time consuming. Hope to see it back up soon.

Thanks for the tutorials, but trust me, I know how DNS works and the challenges are not in *HOW* to do it. That is pretty simple ...

The problem revolves around Scott finding all the registrar info from 1992 and getting it done! :)

Then I have to have the router and ports secure and setup for the new box (and host the nameserver for gnttype) while keeping my corporate network clean and secure.

It'll happen, and it'll be fine ... it just may take awhile to get everyone coordinated ...

FYI - This also means the TSM webiste is unavailable as it is simply a subdirectory of the gnttype domain.
