Heater box shroud removal? O.K.?

Can I take the shroud thing off the heater box and leave it off?

Installing T/A Performance valve covers and that is about the only way the pass. side is going on.

Just wondering if there are any reasons why it can't stay off?

Seems to be a popular mod. Some then put a heat shield on the downpipe (gnttype.org).

I suppose that A/C efficiency may suffer, but I guess that the box doesn't melt.
