How bad do pre-turbo exhaust leaks hurt horsepower?

No offense.. But I put my money is on Bison winning that fight. His slow car I think pushes 600 HP.

Maybe about 600hp:)

Bison,
My postings from $30,000 of experience. Buick Specialist's plus my since 86' production owning self,How about you??? Nevermind, this thread not about you...Because Your so Wrong!!!...80's tech home computers vs the year 2000+ models, enough said there!....Turbo's need a tall gear to pull on. These cars aren't 4:56 gear small blocks..yes leave factory gears an go 26" inch tall tire,it'll be a rocket!! to the 1/8th an then fall flat on it's face!!..if your going 1/4 mile, goodbye motor!!!...All this only applys if you push over 600hp!!!...but you'll live an learn (race ya when your ready standing start to 1 mile!!!)

Blazer.. try an experiment an go up 1 or 2 inches in rear tire size...then all the next steps from there when "it works"

Well I havent owned since 86 since I was 9 years old at the time but have since 1994. So you got me there. $30000 isnt chit to spend on a car. Especially one of these. If I took every $ I spent on my own stuff, all the labor on my own stuff and time I worked on others cars for free and could have it all back in $$$ it would likely be in the $200-225k range. the production ecu has been at least mid nines. If you want to challenge me at least do it in a reasonable manner. I'm not racing you in a mile race. I'll drag race you with the following handicaps just so you have a chance:
1. Ill take the xfi out of my car and run a baseline chip with no wot fuel adjustments so I'll be doing all tuning with no wideband correction. You keep your xfi
2. I'll run 93/alky. You can run whatever you want.
3. I'll go from the stock 3.42 gears to 3.73's even though it might hurt my combo a little.
4. I'll run a 62 or smaller compressor inducer. You can run whatever you want.

Let me know if you want to do it. Figure out what we are racing for.

i had a combo that ran in the 10's easily, with a 4.56 rear, stock ecm with a tt chip, stock maf, pump gas alky.ohh and yes it went well over the stock ecm limitation of 120mph;)

on the exhaust topic the only time i lost et and mph at the track was with a really bad cracked header.

I am currently running 25.8 inch 275 40 17 on 3.42 gears and its like a rocket AFTER the 1/8th. In my experience I'm always faster on 26's vs 28's all else being equal. I've hit 6700 rpm in the powerlogger with no problem with a little 210/210 cam, in fact it did when I blew the gov spring and was pulling away on a 10.0 sec GTR according to the gopro video.

My car has 3.73 gears. Engine loves to be north of 6k rpms. The converter is very efficient. The 3.73 gear is what was the difference in the combo IMO. Its all about knowing your engine's powerband and getting a converter/gear/tire combo to keep it there going down the track.
And for it's wieght and setup, it runs the 1/4 mile pretty good IMO. Not a high end build but runs 9.7's. Hellobozo, what's your car run?

I'm not a 1/4 miler...nor invite a race with a drag car,I'm Autocross/Hwy Set-Up,i run 60 to 160mph.But i've done been the 50,60,now 72's inj,an 48,61, now 71 turbo,as well as all the Ecms, chips, pro dyno tunes with translator, stock location intercoolers now front mount...Now i just plug my lap top in an done with Zero Issues! don't get me wrong, i'm not just prasing XFI, in a point in time you Will need the up-grade,DFI,BigStuff3,Xfi,..etc,etc..

LOL ..so you knew this whole time Stock ECM are limited,Only point i was triing to make...When we do this ,You can keep everything you have,I'll be on the same (but more of it )

My car will be out of paint with full GNX conversion with in the next month..I'll be Sure to post a autocross tire/full exhuast 1/4 mile Time an MPH out of a 109 as i'm kicked off the track...8^) an then a Standing Mile time...8^)

You really have no idea who you are talking to do you? Look at what he has contributed to this community and especially on this message board. Grow up.

Says the 11.6'r ...I've gone 11.99@119 with Bone Stock GN (no cat, test pipe ,full exaust),stock chip/ecm with 1.70 short with just One 150hp Nos kit,It's a brave new world in electronics now, I'm just passing the word along..(psst) now theres one box that does everything tune wise with no limits...

Enjoy!

It's not bone stock with no cat and a 150 shot.... And 11.99 @ 119 is actually not very good with a 150 shot so I stand by my original comment that you don't know chit.

Here's a thought, how about fixing the exhaust and going back to see what changes?

Cracks won't do chit once the turbo is spooled. It's the same effect as a wastegate dumping exhaust energy. If the car isn't picking up with added boost there is some other limitation.

Just to follow up on Bison's knowledge here, he is correct. This is the header I pulled off my car immediately after racing at the TB.com nats. (engine was still hot when we pulled it)

I ran all day with this crack in the passenger side header and still ran 5.80s over 120 mph in the eighth. Now, the 60' times fell off but I'm sure that was more track temp than anything else. Max boost was delayed a little but not much. Could have turned it up and made more exhaust pressure but that would have just further expanded the crack..

My TB brothers lets not fight, if i had half the knowledge you 2 had i would consider myself lucky. Use your knowledge to help the mechaniclly handicapped like me. Not fight with each other. Just my 2 cents. I know both of you (Bison, HelloBozos) have commented on many of my post. And i thank you guys for that.
