N Nick Micale Tech Advisor Staff member Joined May 26, 2001 Feb 3, 2012 #2 Yes, they must have side play. Since the pan is most likely off the engine, you will need to remove the rod caps to see if you have a bad bearing. Usually it is the upper bearing that gets hammered.
