I previously used direct scan and the mph would display fine. The only changes made are going from the stock ecm to the big stuff 3, and removing the cruise control. I also did not hook up the bracket from the shifter linkage to the steering column, which (I think) goes to the gear selector switch. Does the cc or that bracket have anything to do with the mph that the computer sees?
