new turbo

correct

Mount an 87 turbo on you 84-85 intake bracket, measure to the depth of the adapter socket in your 84-85 intake, cut the necessary amount off the adapter or the tubo or both to come out with the necessary length. BTW keep it about 1/16 to 1/8 short. The O-ring has of plenty room to seal. I am sure Chopper will build you a turbo then. I don't know what compressor wheel the 54 has in it. I would think a 60mm wheel in an 87 unit would be more than enough. BTW you MUST bore your TB to match the size of the turbo inlet. Best of luck. It is not brain surgery!!!

The only time a tubo is too big is when you can't close the hood.

the welding it on part is easy its getting someone to bore it out once its on there so its a smoth finish is the key. if i was at home i could show you what im talking about. but you can kinda think what it will look like if you weld it on and dont clean the inside up. the pic attached if you look inside the adapter piece its smooth like that all the way inside and you cant tell where the weld is or where the adapter ends.also as far as the depths and what length you need i can messure mine in 2 weeks.

Great thread- you guys are giving me alot of ideas which will drain my wallet. I need to get past the stinking turbo elbow first. Great posts. Brad

which turbo??

looks like this project is quite do-able.
question now is which turbo to choose. stay with the original TA54 or isthere something out there that would be a better choice??
This being such a expensive mod, I'd like to do this one time...Right Jerryl??

Kind of chiming in here late , but, I went straight to Turbonetics and they welded the adapter plate on for me .

good to hear try calling them and sending a pic of my turbo to let them know what your talking about.

T- Type Tim

Tim
just called Turbonetics, spoke to Ed. He said that they would not be interested in this project.
Do you have a name of someone you delt with there?

damn limited is making it hard for use now adays. good think i got mine done when i did not im not limited on turbos.

Fritz- Do not give up on this turbo. It is better than my TA33C from limit. I suggest you contact other TTYPE owners in you area and they can find someone who can weld on the turbo adapter. Remember-We live in the greatest country in the world and there are alot of welders/ machinest that can do it. You just have to find them. The big companies like limit probably stopped doing this weld job due lack of profit and warranty issues. I would find a local specialist like I am pursuing in a 3 inch downpipe w/o the stinking turbo elbow. Good luck Brad

its probley not that hard to find someone to do it. its all easy i think except finding someone to bore it out once its welded.

Fritz- I agree with Brent-You need a welder and a machinist to port match the turbo to the turbo adapter. A project like this would be easy for me since I live in the Chicagoland area and have acccess to these specialists. The welders and machinists are out there-Find them and get your turbo. Brad

I don't know what compressor wheel the 54 has in it. I would think a 60mm wheel in an 87 unit would be more than enough.

Turbocharger Compressor Wheels

That might help.

Hey,if you can't find anyone in your area to weld it up for you you can ship it to me and I'll do it for you.Just cut it to length and ship the adapter and compressor housing to me.I TIG aluminum all day for a living.

Wfo

thanx. I will take you up on your offer soon as I make a decision on which turbo to get.

if and when I can afford a turbo for my brother and my car, we are going all out TA 64. I want to custom make a down/dump pipe, weld the adapter, and make sure I have all the right stuff!! Dont forget, if you go TA series from PTE or wherever, you will need a throttlebody adapter!!! Your TB hole will not line up with another turbo that is not HOT AIR. Not a difficult problem, but still needed to be addressed!!!

Good luck and keep us posted!

John

adaptor

first i have heard of such an adaptor. anyone have any info? pics?
does this hahe to be fab?

or can the TB just be turned??

I had a local machine shop make one for me,but I've heard of others that just tilt the throttle body.

i didnt run a adapter i just bolted the throttlebody up and left it as is. there is no reason for the adapter In my opinion

fritz you ever figure it out or u need me to look into it? i have a stock 87 turbo around here and all i need is a adapter and i can start looking let me know
