rear end question

how do you tell a 8.5 rear end from a 7.5???? i just took out my rear end out of my 85 and installed a rear end out of a elcamino it is a 336 possi verses the single leg 341 that was in there the thing i noticed is that the one i just put in there has bigger tubes and was 1.5 inches wider on each side thanks
