Solid Roller Cam Coating ?????

Just bought a solid roller Comp Cam (Buick V6 Stage1 valve arrangement) that has been coated with some sort of coating. Lets hear your thoughts on why you need to put a coating on a billet hardened steel roller camshaft. Id be interested in knowing everyones whys and theories or been there done that stories. I have my own lets see what everyone else thinks.

Is it a flat black looking substance? A little more info or a pic might help.
