Steering wheel alignment on new steering shaft and gearbox install?

I removed shaft, gearbox, linkage, everything and didn't secure steering wheel. Does it matter where it's at or can it just spin freely and doesn't matter. Someone said it matters and more than 3 turns each direction can break things in the column?

Installing DSE shaft, Lee gearbox and proforge linkage.

It only matters when there is an air-bag in the steering wheel. In that case I tie a rope between the bottom of the wheel to the brake pedal before removing any involved linkage.

With our cars the steering wheel is free to be spun.

You're welcome. As for steering wheels that shouldn't be turned, it likely includes ones that have the stereo controls in them. Which in our cars doesn't matter.
