I have a problem with my T-400.It will not shift into 3rd sometimes.At WO it kicks down to 2nd gear and stays there until I let up.I do not have the kick down sole.hooked up.Also normal driving it will not go into 3rd sometimes until I let up on the gas pedal or shift into netural then back to 3rd.

I agree about the direct clutches. Not having the detent solenoid operational can put undue stress on the direct clutches when using heavy throttle at lower vehicle speeds such as passing a car on a two-lane. Allowing the transmission to kickdown to second gear is a lot eaasier on it.
One other area to check would be your governor and governor bore. If the governor valve is sticky or there is wear present on the governor shaft and/or the governor case bore, you could wind up with similar symptoms.
