I must admit, I don't I don't know alot about auto trans. I just had my TH400 gone through while I install my new motor. Could the wrong backing plate with four clutches caused this? Or the wrong clutch drum with the combination of backplate or number of clutches? I need to figure out before I go back to the shop and explain to them what happened.

How can that happen if the snap ring was in place?
Also the sprag arrow is the wrong way isn't it ????

It looks as if the drum was thrusting into the intermediate plate. The plate is relieved on one side to create clearance so this doesn't happen. I don't see the clearance in the pictures. Was it installed with the correct side towards the drum ? Another thing that could potential cause this is something missing, like a thrust washer, in the rear portion of the trans causing the drive tube to drop below its normal intended running area.

After looking at those pictures again, It definatly looks like the thick pressure plate isn't relieved on the drum side like it should be. Look closly at below picture.
