Will TM work with car off?

I just downloaded TurboMeter and built a cable. I was wondering if I should get any readings when the car in not running. I was thinking I would at least get a TPS reading or maby the P/N switch. I had the key in the "On" position but I didn't start it. Does the car have to be running for it to send a signal to the ALDL port?

For anyone who might have the same question:
It will read when the car is not running. Most of the values are 0 but it still gets a signal. My problem was with the driver for my Serial-USB adapter. After reloading the adapter everything worked. Another win for the Radio Shack adapter.
