    L71 is the 427 with 435hp you listed above. L89 is the RPO code for aluminum heads on the 427 engines. The L88 had the aluminum heads included in the package.

    The L88's were iron blocks with aluminum heads; targeted at road racers. 103 octane was specified by a decal on the parking brake, if not used it warned of engine damage. 68-69 the L88's were visually distuingished by a special hood; otherwise there was no way of telling. There was 3 427's...
