If your trans is a lock up then using the plug would be the only way to control that aspect. If your trans is a non lock up, you do not need the plug at all.

That will work. You need to cap off your MAF pipe/sensor. I typically use the MAP hose to the vac block. If you have a vac leak the smoke will find it. I typically see the throttle body shaft seals leak alot.
Your trans case could be welded as long as the dowel alignment holes have not been compromised or internal components not damaged. I had this happen by a shipping company.... Was able to repair but it looks like Frankenstein. Fingers crossed the internals are good on both your engine and trans!!
