Is it worth upgrading to a 200 amp alt.
I have alot of the upgraded items on my car that I know sucks more juice.
Also how hard is it to rebuild using the kit?
I am speaking of the alternator on Turbobuicks.com
Thanks in advance

Hi,have had the kit for a few weeks already its easy to install just follow the instructions on gnttype.Mike S is also a good guy to deal with.

Can you post a link to this kit,,,:)

Since it is a direct bolt in it must be a small case. So in essence it is the same thing as your existing GN alt with fewer windings. Yes it will make more amperage once engine rpms are over 1500 but amperage at lower rpms (like idle) will suffer greatly. Even with a heavy duty regulator, it can only compensate so much. I would definetly ask to see a performance sheet. Take a good look at rpms under 1000.

Each alternator arrives with its very own "dyno" numbers...
amp output per rpm.

Has the HD fan & a plated pulley. Very nicely done overall.

HTH :)

That stinks.

I just put on Kirbans Chrome Alternator a few months back. I wish the 200amp was Chrome.:(

NO PROBLEM

Nj,

Sell the chrome & get the 200A from TBS.com. :)

(Has the blizzard begun yet?)

Could anybody answer, is it really needed. Will the stock 120amp alt. be sufficient to run an upgraded stereo, hot wired fuel pump, dual fans, full gauges?
Is a 200 amp upgrade overkill?

You will be fine with the 120A. That is what I have in my TTA and it has 2 batteries. One for the stereo and one for the car. My voltmeter never dips below 12v. The Delco alts are very good units.
Years ago I looked into getting my 120 rewound to 200. Took it to a Delco electronic shop near me. The guy told me there is an inherent trade off when you do this. To increase the amperage you actually remove some of the windings. This has a negative side of less amperage at idle. So I instead bought a high output alternator from Lestek. They make alts for industrial and heavy construction equipment. Big mistake! Same thing - lots of power at higher rpms but didn't do jack at idle. Called techsupport and they said the same thing, there is a trade off when using a high output alternator. If you want a true high output alternator which retains good output at idle you will need to get a large case alternator. These will have heavier gauge wire and a larger stator. But I don't think a large case will fit in our Buicks very easily. Wrangler makes a good one that has a large external voltage regulator.

The stock 120a is more that enough for our cars unless you got a big stereo system. Even the limited non-turbo regals don't have a 120a alternator I think its a 90 amp.
