Hello, I have a 2004 nissan maxima se and recently the trans took a dump! I've done some research and it turns out nissan put diffrent transmissions in the 2004 models. The bad part is you can get a auto four speed for around $600.00 bucks at a salvage yard. And the worse thing is the 5 speed used costs $1,800.00! Is there any way to make the 4 speed work in the car or am i just screwed? thanks

You would probably need the ECM and Wiring Harness from an Auto equipped Car for it to operate properly and have the correct wiring for the Trans.

That trans is an Aisin Warner model known as a AW55-50SN or by Nissan as a RE5F05A .
If it just started acting up then you can replace the valve body and cure it. If you have been driving it for awhile I can guarantee that you cooked some clutches.
But replacing it with a different trans is pretty much impossible unless you want to replace harnesses and several modules. Just not worth the expense IMHO.
