Hopefully you guys can help out. The tranny is in my 86 Cutlass. No ECM, just a single green wire to the connector.

I checked all switches (vacum and brake) and they work perfect. When I put 12V to the connector you can hear the TCC click. I tried putting 12V while driving in 3rd and 4th gear but the converter refuses to lock up.

On to the noises. With the car sitting still, running in Park, the tranny makes a noise that sounds like a worn speedo cable. Sounds very mechanical, like dry a bearing or something. Also there is a ticking noise in P. Sounds like an exhaust leak. When you put the car in D, the tranny quites down. 3rd is the same. But when shifted into 2nd (the car is stopped in all examples) the tranny starts making the noises again. It seems really weird since the car is always in first gear, but the noise comes and goes as you shift between 3rd and 2nd. When actaully driving in 1st and 2nd gear, with the shifter in D, the tranny is pretty quite, but you can still hear a whine like noise. When shifted into 2nd while moving the tranny is really loud.

Any ideas? I need the tranny to last another month, while I get my winter vehicle up and running.

Thank You
Steve

First thing I would do is make sure the torque converter bolts are tight, and then check for cracks in the flywheel, especially around the mounting bolts to the crank.

As far as the lock up goes, that could be any number of things, including contamination in the lock up valve or even possibly a bad converter. Could be one of many things actually.

I will probably pull the the pan this weekend. How hard is it on the tranny to run without lockup?

Thanks
Steve
