2nd Gear Starts and Delays…..

Well brought my tired new toy to the track.. I will try and give a quick summary.. The car cant get out of it’s own way out of the hole.. I ran 14.1 @ 106.60 with a 2.55 60’.. The converter seems to only stall around 1300. The trans used to have a slight flare between 2nd and 3rd gear.. Fluid looked brown… I was planning on a complete rebuild.. Other than the Flare the trans Chirped 2nd and Hard Shifts thru all the gears under normal driving.. It only flared 2-3 under WOT..

So everything seemed fine at the track.. Got 4 passes in with just 2/3 flare up.. Go to leave the track and notice the car wont shift to 3rd… When I got up to 50+ it finally went in.. Then no OD until about 70+… Once it is in the gear it doesn’t slip or anything. Now I come to a stop and it does not leave out of 1st, it starts in 2nd unless I put it park and put it back in D.

I know the trans was on borrowed time. The other thing I noticed before going to the track is I never feel the trans lock up.. Leads me to believe the wrong converter is in the car, that’s why the stall is so low.. (maybe it took a crap)

Anyway, I just wanted to know if there was something I was overlooking, or was there an easy fix so it shifts right under normal driving. I adjusted my tv cable.. it made a difference on the 1-2 shift (early), but nothing else.

Thanks, Dave

sounds to me like something inside is letting go, convertor or something else and fine metallic debree is clogging the valve body causing valves to stick and maybe the TV valve is stuck in its bore and causing too high of line pressure causing the delayed shifts and too much pressure for the 1-2 accumulator to acumulate so the band stays applied. I would drop the pan and see whats in there debree wise and report back. Good luck
