1991 Ford Explorer. Volt gauge drops and the battery light comes on. If I rev it way high for two seconds, the gauge pops back up, light goes out and it is fine and remains at full power for another 20 minutes until I shut down and it cools off.

A few times I hit it with a hammer and it popped back up. A shot of PB Blaster in the ALT while it was running also seemed to help.

Does this sound like a simple $20 in rebuild parts (like brushes) or a regulator? It has an external regulator on the back on the ALT and it does not make any bad sounds.

TIA
