I was able to eliminate it last time by grounding my amp in the trunk directly to the frame (cut a hole in the trunk), grounding the battery to the fender well and to the front bumper support, and of course grounding the radio itself. The alternator in my 87 TR is original and has 164k miles on it. I have a new one in the box. Should I try swapping alternators?

did you re-check ALL of the wires?..start at the battery cables..if you grounded the amp to the steel frame ..it will rust if you dont "seal" those connections..is the battery ground connected to the frame?...its kinda hard to help track down a noise problem over the internet...good luck joe:)
