Looking to purchase a super clean 2002 EB Explorer with 85k. 4.0 Auto 2WD.
I've read that they're notorious for tranny (5T55W) problems. Biggest being the servo bushing wears and causes pressure loss and band wear. Also read that there's a repair for this using brass sleeves. Anyone have experience with this? As of now the tranny shifts fine but just wanting to do preventative maintenance. Thanks

The first thing to do if its a sohc engine is put it 2nd gear and accelerate. If there is rattling from engine get ready for timing chain repair. Without right tools engine has to come out. Otc makes a kit just for that engine for under 200
Not sure on the trans. we would just throw remans in it. boss didnt want to pay for rebuild time. thats the trans with no dip stick?Fill through the pan?

You are correct with the brass sleeves,(boring out the case is a pain) but there is no preventative maintenance to prevent it. I seen 80k trucks need it and 200k trucks not need it. Generally it is a area of concern so it is a normal practice just to do it on all builds. No matter what mileage. I see more issues with broken band and solenoid packs going south. Best thing is to drop pan and if it looks good just do a simple service. Remember to use the right fluid. (5R55W)

So is an entire rebuild required just to install the sleeves? Also heard that the valve body gasket can leak causing problems. I drove it for about a half hour yesterday with no problems. Doesn't slam into gear and shifts very well. What symptoms should be on the lookout for? Thanks

Yes it's the 5R55W.

Yes, you have to drill out the servo pin bore (2). Has to be built. That's on the older models 5r44 the newer trans has vulcanized gaskets.
