I know there are plenty in the TB community but reason i ask is i have an idea for an invention but not sure what steps i should take.. ANy input is appreciated.

Y26 funny you should ask because i'm in the same boat too. I have an invention and already have a patent for it, i'm having trouble tyring to find a marketer or a a buyer, any tips would help too.

DO NOT go to invention submission corparation... its a joke my uncle made that mistake about 10 years ago!

find a good lawyer in your area that deals with this kinda thing.

Could you get into a patenting a bit. Did you do a mock up of your product???? All my ideas are on paper...

You need to hire a patent attorney in order to file for a patent, to take care of all the legalities and what not. Basically once you have an idea for a product, the attorney does extensive research to make sure they is no copy infringement and basically makes sure no other product exist on the market like yours. Luckily my idea was not thought of yet and was able to obtain a patent, but now I’m just stuck here in rut. I hear there is a statistics that 80% of people with legitimate patents do not make money at all because of failure on there part to become prosperous and sell or license their idea. There are many types of patents though that you can receive, you can even have a patent on an idea that already exits but that can be improved for better performance or usability.

I am also in the same boat. So, I should go see a lawyer for the next step? How much would something like this cost?

DAVISON

do a google for davison design or call this number: 412-967-0124. im not saying that its a sure thing but heres what im going through. i contacted them and they sent me a package that i had to explain my product and draw a design. next they do a patent search to ensure there isnt already one out there, youll be surprised at how many similar items theyll find. that cost me about 700 bucks. then they search companies and see if they might be interested. its alot of money but i think if i do sell a product then it was well worth it and if i dont then at least i tried something. a lawyer will cost alot more. the next step is what they call virtual reality, its really a computer graphic of the item in the packaging of the targeted company, after you sign off on the design which might look nothing like the original, they start to develope the product and then they will present it to the company. this is the most expensive part, i paid over 8k for this. im waiting for word on the finished product but its getting kind of tight cause im leaving to the gulf at the end of the month. if the target company doesnt buy your product, the design company will continue to solicit other companies that might be interested until you say stop, the only other payment you make will be for the packaging change. i wish i could show you mine but i dont think i legaly can without risking all my dough. good luck!!

As hard as patenting something is, it is easier than enforcing it. Look at the poor guy that invernted intermittent wipers. Took him over 25 years to win a court case against auto manufacturers that ripped off his idea. Once he did win though, it was royalties for every car built with intermittent wipers since 1967. At least his heirs will live well off his idea.

I know there is a website that you can search to see if it is patented already. Not as good as a lawyer doing the research, but you may find it there yourself and save the attorneys fees. My idea was a device that would squeeze the water or oil out of a tuna can so your hands don't end up smelling like a Whore house. I found out that there were like 10 things similar to my idea, and I still can't figure out why nothing is on the market.

I always wanted to build a wrench that was a lot like a gearwrench, but with a sprag in the end so no matter how little you turned it it would still grab a new spot. Not too long ago I saw a set advertised somewhere. Coulda been rich. Oh well, where would I put all that money anyways?

bob :D

If anyone could tell me where to find that website I would greatly appreciate it.

Patients just keep honest people honest. Unless, this really is a money maker, and you have backing to enforce the patient, you might just be wasting alot of money. Not to mention if someone say in Australia, decisides to knock it off, what are you prepared to do about them?.

In this world of nothing matters but money, it's about who can afford the best lawyers. Kind of cynical, but, I've seen a good idea, knocked off, and the results.

I've got a number of patents from the company I work for too. But what is interesting is the stuff that doesn't get patented! This stuff is what's called a 'company secret" and not avaialable for a patent:mad:

There is an advantage to someone stealing your patent. You let them do the leg work and sue them if they make any money.:)

I have an invention. DO NOT GO TO INVENTION SUBMISSION ORGANIZATIONS. We spent about $16,000 for our invention about 10 years ago. Currently it is being used on Lexus's and infinity's. We are in the process of filing a law suit with the manufacturer of this product that is selling them to these auto companys. Find a really good lawyer. Go to the United States Patent and trade mark association to look up all the info you need. It will also tell you if the lawyer tou are dealing with is a registered patent Attorney. Have fun and be Patient.
