Benefits of an alky kit on stock gn?

I know this is a post that everyone has read in the past, but what kind of performance would I be able to get out of my stock 87' gn with a alky kit. The only thing I've done to the car is put in a walboro 340 hot wired. If anyone could give me ET times or horsepower numbers it would be greatly appreciated. :D

The benefits of AI are essentially the same potential benefits you'd derive from running 99-100 Octane fuel...the ability to run more timing & more boost without knock/detonation than 93 Octane fuel allows.

Your ET is a reflection of the current state of your motor's condition, tuning, traction, & your skill/aptitude/reaction time as a driver.

So, any "specific" reply would only be a shot-in-the-dark "guesstimate"...way too many variables to consider for any real accuracy, as all these cars are different.

Prolly up the timing to 23* in 1st and 2nd and 21* in 3rd and 4th.

Prolly up the boost to 21-22psi.

That with a good exhaust and perhaps a duttweiler neck and you should drop to high 12's in the quarter from about 14 seconds. :)

Prolly need a set of Nittos too. :cool:

I ran 13.5 at 4000lbs. even with my car mostly stock with alky.

Reds street 93 chip and slipping original tranny too. :D
 
Plus, cleaner combustion chambers, less detonation, increased performance, increased innercooler efficiency, etc.

I've sold kits to guys running 18 PSI, specifically cuase this way theyre no longer on the edge of detonation. So its not just for owners who want to go 27 PSI Bonzai runs.. its for everday drivers that want to assure knock retard is under control. At 18 PSI, the use is so minimal that a tank lasts 1 1/2 months.

Just a different angle, its not just for racing, but to keep the rattle under control.

Some systems can even protect you against an 30 PSI overboost.

Its part of a bigger equation to help support increased power levels. Its an insurance policy on your engine, which usually pays off pretty nicely..
 
This is an invitation to those of you who have not installed alcohol injection on your car. There are no downsides to alcohol injection.......Only advantages. Make a lot more power and protect your motor from detonation at the same time.

Installing a quality alky kit on your TR is very inexpensive. One of our members, Steve Monroe, has a site that gives easy, complete, instructions on how to make up and install what is commonly referred to as the DIY alchohol injection system. I put mine together over three years ago. While you have to get parts from different sources, it takes no more time to install than any other kit. Cost me about $150 then, and I think I can duplicate it today for $175. The DIY kit employs the use of the $60 Shurflo pump #2687. More pump than you'll ever need. If you have any problems locating any of the parts, or need some specific information on installation, just post here on the alky forum for answers. Additionally to the instructions on the website below, I have installed a warning light next to my boost gauge to let me know the pump is spraying and an activation or test button so I can activate the system manually. Also worth mentioning is, with the Sureflo pump, it's not necessary to gum up your alky mixture with lubricant. It's not necessary. Spend more if you want to. If you've read some posts here making you think installing or using alky was complicated, it's not at all. Here's Steve Monroe's website....

Talk about reliability, I have more than 75,000 miles on my car since I installed the DIY kit, and can truthfully say, it has never failed to come on. Never had a pump failure. I have no knock in high gear at 24 psi running a TE44 turbo. DIY alcohol injection not only gives you more power, cheaply, but protects your engine from destructive detonation, which could destroy your motor. I NEVER had any problem tuning it. Just figure your turn-on point, usually between 10 and 15#s of boost, set it and forget it. There is no pump speed to set. Pump is preset to 60 psi and I use a .032 jet and a one gallon reservoir. End of story! However, if you like to experiment, the pump pressure is adjustable to over 100 psi. I've read many posts about alky being hard to tune, I really don't know what they're talking about. They must not have a Steve Monroe DIY kit. This DIY kit can put your STOCK TR into the 12s. Get busy!

The complications happen when you break into the 11's for power.. Thats when the power is really being made and requirements are higher.

Decide what you would like the car to do..then make a game plan how your going to take care of that issue..thats what this forum is for. To give different views on the same thing. I too had your feelings initially when I did mine 2 years ago..so i understand.

There are pro's and cons to every way you decide to go about doing this..they usually revolve around $$$ and convenience

And just added..you can do this with your scanmaster..as your end result of 02's will vary with fueling. Your looking for zero knock and a happy motor. Direct scan/turbolink are needed for extended diagnostics. like making chips.."

If you search and look around, you can purchase denatured in bulk at Ace Hardware (Crown) in a 5 gallon container for $30.00 In a pinch, you can get 1 gal at Home Depot or Lowe's for around $10.00 So if you have a 1/2 gal alky resovoir, you pay about $3.00 per fill up (at bulk rate) which will last you maybe a month or longer. As far as where you refill, that would be at your house or shop as you carefully pour in the alky in your resorvoir. HTH.
 
cool, that sounds great, i had no idea it was that cheap, i will be getting one someday
 
While it works fine, it is not necessary to run denatured alcohol. You can buy Isopropyl at Walmart for $.89 a qt. or you can purchase methanol for about $2.50 a gallon. I add about 33% distilled water to my methanol.

Thanks for all the info John. I went to that site and after reading it I think I got myself a weekend project. I am going to go get all the parts tomorrow and install it over the weekend hopefully. I think SMC wants somthing like 300 now. I would rather go Steves route and save myself the money. Thanks again

The type of pump dictates what kind of alcohol can/cannot be used. And if lube is needed or not.

I supply prefab braided hoses for the DIY GN/TTA projects.. if you want to use braided hose. As well as nozzles and stuff... if it can make life easier.
