I've taken off my oil pan and timing cover and I want to clean all the grease and oil off so I can actually see the parts. What's the best cleaner to buy? I've tried some acetone and it works pretty well but it's expensive as hell, anything cheaper?

if its off the car and there is no rubber....... Oven cleaner! leave it out in the sun get it good and hot spary it on then hose it off.

AZ sun is like an oven I guess that's why it works good

If you are doing a lot of cleaning, definitely Kerosene for the price. Stuff works so good, it will clean and dry out your cuticles to the point where they will crack!

It won't evaporate quickly either and is not as prone to "static discharge" flammability. ;)

I agree. Kerosene. Acetone like lacquer thinner, evaporates very quickly. Kerosene will not evaporate and you'll be able to brush it on and rinse with more kerosene.

I would say just get some good degreeser from the local parts store eaier to use and most work really well for the $'s :)

Or dish Soap also works well to clean parts ;)

Just my .02 :)

I've always used B12 Carb cleaner, but it will remove any paint also so be careful what it contacts....evaporates quickly which I like also....wipe off all gasket surfaces with it, and its dry in no time to apply the gasket.

I use pure mineral spirit paint thinner. For some reason just mineral spirits is way more than the pure MS paint thinner??? It is cheap; just put a few gallons in a big plastic bucket and let parts soak. A good parts cleaner brush helps speed things up. It dries pretty good - not brake clean type dry off but very good.

Then, if necessary, I break out the much stronger lacquer thinner.

I was thinking about mixing up the stuff that is listed on the 2+2 Gum Cutter can - that stuff is strong but goes so fast so a can of MEK, acetone, toluene...whatever it is, and mix it up.
