I have my motor out of my car and I am going to go through it. I have a question as far as the billet mains and girdles go. As far as mods go I have a PT-54 turbo, CAS front mount, ATR headers, 218/212 cam, ATR 3" downpipe and 3" exhaust, 50lb injectors, Champion GN1's with matching intake and plenum. The trans is a fresh billet roller piece with a 9.5 Precision 3500 converter. The motor is stock for now and I had a leakdown test done and it was leaking down some about 20% on 1 and 5. I figure while I have it out I should go through it and wanted to know what I should do as far as just doing the center 2 billet mains or all of them or just a girdle or what. I drive the car quite a bit but am also going to race the car as well.

When you put a girdle on do you replace the mains with the billet ones or do you use the stock ones? Also how much machine work does it take to put on a girdle. Also with the setup would I be better off using an aftermarket piston like JE's or just leaving the stock pistons. I only want to do this once but at the same time if the stock pistons will work just as good and a girdle or anything is overkill then I am open to opinions. Thanks for your help in this matter.

In my opinion, and the opinion of many others including race jace himself, stock mains are more than enough if using a girdle. it does take some precision machining, but the directions are really well done. Any reputable shop should have no trouble. as far as billet caps go, it depends on how fast you want to go, i.e.- how much stress you'll be putting on the bottom end. If you're planning on anything faster than low 11's, id say girdle it. above that, i think the 2 center billet mains would suffice. If you're getting 20% leakdown, chances are you'll need a rebore anyway, so for peace of mind's sakes, i'd go with a good forged piston.

either do one or the other. doing both will be a waste of money...

Crap, I wasted my money! One area you can't waste enough money in is fuel, and the bottom end. Brian
