I have a problem with my car running rough, and I think it is has been narrowed down to a problem with the cam sensor. The car idles terrible and has lots of hesitation and stumbling. At idle when the cam sensor is unplugged, it starts running better. Special thanks to Steve Wood for all the help:) The cam sensor should be set correctly, I just got the Caspers tool and will verify shortly. I have an extra cam sensor from a motor that was in a previous car. My question is: If I have to swap cam sensors, do I just swap the cap, or do I have to replace the long part that goes down in the motor too??? I'm still a little fuzzy on this deal, any advice would be appreciated. TIA...Mark

The cap contains the electronics so I would try swapping that out first...if that doesn't fix it then try swapping out the whole unit...also afte removing the cap check the screw that holds the interruptor ring...it can come loose and cause problems...

Ok thats kind of what I was thinking, but wanted to be sure. Thanks for the help man.

cutting out

When I had that problem, I put a new cap and it still ran like
sh*t. Problem was fixed when I changed the entire sensor
though.

Really, that is interesting. Sounds like I better be prepared to do it all just in case. Thanks a lot for your reply man, cause that thing is 30 miles or so from here. I will pull it all out and bring it back here. Thanks...Mark

Well the "spare" cam sensor didnt look as good as the one that was on there. I used the Caspers tool and tried various positions in the "window" and I still can't get the car to run right. So I think I'm gonna just get a new sensor so it will fix it or be ruled out. A couple more questions though. Should I go to the dealer and get one, or would one from Autozone be ok? Also do you just get the cap, or do you get the entire assembly? At this point I want to replace the whole thing. Thanks again for your help...Mark
